Playing Live Sports to Improve Your Health

First, it must be acknowledged that all kinds of exercise are beneficial. Exercise does more than just help you lose weight and gain muscle, even though that is the goal of the majority of people who work out. In the proper amounts, it also makes you feel better as well. While one may feel exhausted and perhaps in mild pain after strong physical exertion, they will still experience a natural high.

This is because during intense activity, endorphins are released in to the blood stream, which relieve pain and give you a feeling of happiness. In fact, endorphins are similar to morphine, and the name technically means morphine produced within. Don't worry, though; endorphins are not addictive, unlike their external counterpart.

One of the most important exercises is the aerobic exercise. In this type, one gets their heart rate and breathing accelerated through running or another similar activity. The primary purpose of aerobic exercise is to strengthen the heart, so it can work more efficiently and pump more blood with each beat. The lower your heart rate, the stronger it is, so as you aerobically work out more and more, you should see a decrease in heart rate.

Most popular sports have an aerobic aspect to them, and include basketball, lacrosse, soccer, and swimming. Sports that have limited running, such as baseball, do not deliver much in this area. You do not need to play a team sport to participate in this type of exercise. Individual activities such as running, biking, and even hiking can strengthen your heart as much as team sports.

While the heart is important, most people like to have their other, more visible muscles stronger as well. In aerobic exercises, which often involve a lot of running, the legs are inherently strengthened, although many other muscles are left out.

It is difficult to exercise certain muscles in team sports, but heavily utilized body parts, such as the arms, do see benefits. Rowing is a great workout sport, as not only does it strengthen the arm muscles substantially, but it is one of the few sports that directly work on the abs. Also, most sports indirectly use many of the muscles in the body, so even if you are not exercising something directly, it ultimately shares the gains made by other muscles.

Flexibility is just as important as strength, as having improved dexterity prevents injury and enables comfortable stretching. This attribute is developed in a number of sports, and it is the easiest to work on alone. Increasing your flexibility does not require powerful training; instead, you just need to follow easy stretching regimes.

The best sports that increase flexibility are gymnastics and martial arts. Although flexibility is not extensively built up by aerobic sports, it is still useful in improving your performance in those sports. As you can see, it is important to participate in a multitude of activities, so all of the muscles in your body can be equally exercised.

FIFA World Cup Background

The FIFA World Cup has taken place every four years since its first tournament in 1930 - with the exception of 1942 and 1946 due to World War II - between the senior men's national soccer teams of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Since its inaugural tournament, the FIFA World Cup - now also known as the Soccer World Cup, the Football World Cup, or simply the World Cup - has become the most widely viewed sports championship in the world, with an even larger television audience than the Olympic Games.
Since 1977 FIFA has also organized youth equivalents of the international tournament, as well as club football equivalents and equivalents for soccer variations including futsal and beach soccer. In 1991, FIFA also introduced a women's soccer equivalent to the World Cup, called the FIFA Women's World Cup, the first of which took place in the People's Republic of China between twelve nations and was won by the United States and which now takes place between sixteen teams over the course of three weeks.
When the world's first international soccer match had taken place in 1872, in Glasgow between Scotland and England, the creators of the game - as well as by the time the first international soccer tournament, the first British Home Championship, had taken place twelve years later in 1884 between Scotland and Ireland - the sport had still yet to gain much international attention and was played very little outside of the U.K. Nevertheless, the beginnings of soccer's international popularity were budding. As other nations did come to acknowledge the sport in the years that followed, it was still only regarded as a demonstration sport, especially when it came to the Olympic Games; during the 1900 and 1904 Olympics, it was played as an event, but without the awarding of any medals.
In 1904, the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in Paris as an official, organized international governing body that would represent the interests and advancement of soccer worldwide, and among its first orders of business was to attempt to establish a truly international soccer tournament outside of the context of the Olympics, although it took years for them to successfully achieve that goal. The World Cup would become the premiere international sporting event culminating in the most coveted sports award in the world.
Since 1966, each FIFA WC tournament has had its own mascot, typically reflective in some way of the given year's host country; and more recently, each WC has also had its own specially designed official match balls for each year. The first mascot was World Cup Willie, a lion representative of that year's hosts, England, wearing a Union Flag Jersey which read "World Cup." In 1970, the mascot was Juanito, a young boy clad in a kit and sombrero, as Mexico was the host of that year's Cup. Since then, other mascots have included Naranjito (an orange) for Spain in 1982; Pique (a jalapeno pepper) for Mexico when they hosted again in 1986; Ciao (an Italian tri-color stick figure for Italy in 1990; Striker, the WC Pup for the United States in 1994; Footix (a rooster) for France in 1998, and Zakumi (a leopard) for South Africa in 2010.

The FIFA World Cup is the Most Prestigious Soccer Tournament in the World

FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association and the first FIFA world cup came into being in 1930 in Uruguay. The commencement of the first FIFA world cup was history in the making. The soccer world cup came into being only after the game met with success in numerous other tournaments across the world.
Soccer Championships - Where it all started
The first soccer match ever recorded in history was between England and Scotland in Glasgow in 1872. This was followed by the British Home Championship that was started in 1888 and at this point in time, the popularity of the sport remained within the United Kingdom only. In the early 19th century, soccer started becoming popular outside the UK and was being played largely as a demonstration sport. This simply meant that there were no medals or awards for the taking. In fact, soccer was introduced in the 1900 as well as 1904 Summer Olympics in France and Canada respectively. Only 3 club teams participated in the tournament during both the Summer Olympics. Soccer was also played in the 1906 Summer Olympics also known as the Intercalated Games in Athens and there was participation from 4 teams including 3 clubs.
Following the 1904 Olympics, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) was formed. The Federation made an attempt to organize an international soccer tournament between countries that were outside of the Olympic framework. This tournament is considered as the first ever step towards modern soccer championships and this was held in Switzerland in 1906. The sad news is that FIFA declared this competition as a complete failure.
Soccer went on to become an official sport in the 1908 Olympics in England and it was only in 1914 that FIFA started recognizing the Olympic soccer tournament as a "world football championship for amateurs." Following their acceptance, FIFA agreed upon taking the responsibility of the management of the event. This opened the doors for the first international soccer competition in the form of 1920 Olympics. The champions were Belgium followed by Uruguay in the next two Olympics in 1924 and 1928.
The FIFA world cup
The success of soccer in Olympic tournaments made FIFA reconsider their dream of organizing an international championship. With President Jules Rimet heading from the front, the FIFA congress in a meeting at Amsterdam in 1928 decided to organize a world championship. The host country for the first FIFA world cup was named as Uruguay since they were two time Olympic Champions. So in 1930, the first FIFA world cup came into existence. The first soccer world cup saw participation from 13 countries including 7 from South America, 4 from Europe, and 2 from North America.
The first FIFA world cup matches were held simultaneously on 18 July 1930 and the winners were France and USA. Uruguay went on to become the champions by defeating Argentina 4-2 in front of a 93,000 strong home crowd in Montevideo. The FIFA world cup is played once every 4 years with 32 teams participating for the trophy.
The last FIFA world cup (2006) was held in Germany and Italy was crowned as the champions. The next FIFA world cup (2010) is going to be held in South Africa from 11 June to 11 July 2010.

Why Do We Call It Soccer Not Football?

The world's most popular game is known by many names; however there is much debate in English speaking countries regarding what it should be called. While most in North America and Australia refer to the sport as soccer, the rest of the world calls it football. What is the reason for this confusing naming convention?
To understand the debate, the history of soccer needs to be examined. The modern game can be traced back to 19th century England where football and rugby had not yet divided into separate sports. Eventually, disagreements on how the game should be played led to a separate set of rules being developed. These rules became known as the Cambridge Rules, and with their establishment the sport of association football was born.
Officially speaking then, the sport is known as association football. England exported the modern game to most of the world, and most English speaking countries in turn began calling the sport football. In fact, even when translated into other languages such as Spanish and Portuguese, the game retains the futbol name.
At the same time however, the word "soccer" was created through slang by merging the -soc part of the word "association" to the -er suffix. Language can sometimes develop organically in this way and the creation of this word had huge ramifications for the naming of the sport when the time came for the game to be imported to the North American continent.
At the time when the game was being introduced to North America, American Football was exploding in popularity. To avoid confusion, the term soccer was used to distinguish it from the vastly different game. This is not to say that as soon as the sport was introduced to North America it was named soccer; quite the contrary actually. In truth, the term football was used concurrently to the point where the association overseeing soccer in the United States was known as the United States of America Foot Ball Association, then becoming the United States Soccer Football Association, before finally settling on its present name as the United States Soccer Federation.
Eventually though, the growth of American football meant that the term soccer remained the only name the sport would be known as in North America. Despite the United States being a relatively minor player on the international soccer scene until very recently, American culture quickly spread the term around the world.
To this day, heated arguments take place over the correct term for the sport. Those outside of North America typically resent the term soccer, however it must be said that while the name may be different, the game itself is the same around the world.

An Exposition of the Beautiful Game of Football

The game of football is the number one sport in the world, with an estimated viewing audience exceeding more than 2 billion. Since its inception by the English in the 1960's, football has grown in leaps and bounds, with the Federation of International Football (FIFA) World Cup being the climax of the football year for both players and countries affiliated to the World Football governing body.
The game of football can be so intense that emotions may spill over like it occurred in the 2006 FIFA World Cup final held in Germany when French star Zinedine Zidane head-butted Marco Matarazzi of Italy in a moment of rage. He was instantly shown the red card and his exit paved the way for the eventual triumph of Italy.
The game is played by eleven players from two teams and each team is usually allowed to have substitutes players who are expected to sit at the reserve bench together with the team officials. Three substitutes are normally allowed in an organized game of football including the goalkeeper.
A game of football can either end in a win or a scoreless/score draw. The center referee, assistant referee 1, assistant referee 2 and the fourth referee are usually in charge of officiating in the round leather game from the start to the end of the game.
In some countries like the United States of America and Canada, the game is referred to as Soccer, while it is popularly called Football in the rest part of the world. This popular sport consists of four departments- goalkeeping, defence, midfield and attack. The ability to coordinate all four departments will determine the success or failure of a team.
The English Premier League is presently the most glamorous and lucrative football league in the world while the Brazilian national football team- The Samba boys, are the most successful football nation in the history of the game.
Some common features that must be present in a standard field of play include: the center circle, the goal post, the corner flag post, the corner arc, the half way line, the penalty area and the penalty arc. These important features are usually marked with white paint to ensure that players see them properly in the course of a match.
Some popular football leagues in the world include the Spanish La Liga, the German Bundesliga, the French Ligue 1, the Italian Serie A and the Portuguese Liga. Some notable football players include:
  • Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele)
  • Diego Armando Maradona
  • Cristiano Ronaldo
  • Lionel Messi
  • Augustine Okocha
  • Luis Figo
